The Charity CFO is a nationally recognized accounting and advisory firm exclusively serving
nonprofit organizations. We partner with mission-driven leaders to provide fractional CFO
services, outsourced accounting, and strategic financial guidance that helps nonprofits grow
sustainably, remain compliant, and make confident, data-informed decisions.
Our work goes beyond bookkeeping and compliance. We act as trusted financial partners to
nonprofit CEOs, boards, and leadership teams – helping organizations strengthen financial

Through our fractional CFO model, we bring senior-level financial expertise to nonprofits that

planning.
At The Charity CFO, we value clarity, accountability, and generosity. We believe strong financial
leadership is a catalyst for stronger missions, healthier teams, and greater community impact.

Radical Transparency. These values shape how we work together, serve our nonprofit clients,
and make decisions as a firm.
Lead with Generosity
We believe generosity shows up through support, collaboration, and a willingness to help others
succeed. We assume positive intent, create space for growth, and go the extra mile for our
clients and each other.
Own It and Grow
We take ownership of our work and our outcomes. Mistakes are expected; learning is required.
We value people who follow through, seek feedback, and are committed to continuous
improvement – both personally and professionally.
Radical Transparency
We value clear, honest, and timely communication. We share information openly, address
challenges directly, and do the right thing even when it’s uncomfortable. Transparency builds
trust with our clients, our teammates, and our leadership.
At The Charity CFO, we believe clarity is a form of respect, accountability enables growth, and

Summary
The Director of Onboarding is a senior leadership role responsible for owning the onboarding
operating system and ensuring new nonprofit clients are set up for long-term success with The
Charity CFO. This role is accountable for outcomes, visibility, and risk management, not day-to-
day task execution.
The Director of Onboarding leads the onboarding team, designs and continuously improves
onboarding systems, and ensures leadership has timely, accurate insight into onboarding
progress, capacity, and risk. Success in this role is defined by the performance of the team, the
quality and timeliness of onboarding outcomes, and strong cross-functional trust.
Job Responsibilities
This is not your typical 9-5 job with a set list of tasks/responsibilities. Ultimately, the Director is
accountable for the success of their team and for enabling the company to meet its broader
goals. This requires that the Director is constantly assessing their job duties and proactively
changing processes to achieve desired outcomes. Job responsibilities will include, but are not
limited to:
1. Onboarding Strategy & Systems Ownership
○ Own and continuously improve the onboarding operating model, including
workflows, templates, task readiness standards, handoffs, quality controls, and
documentation.
○ Design onboarding processes that scale with firm growth and reduce
dependency on individual contributors.
○ Identify recurring bottlenecks or rework drivers and lead system-level
improvements.
○ Adopt a technology-focused approach to continuously improve team productivity
and results.
2. Team Leadership, Development & Support
○ Lead, coach, and develop a team of onboarding associates, project manager,
and support staff.
○ Set clear expectations for quality, deadlines, and client service; hold team
members accountable to those standards.
○ Provide timely, constructive feedback and conduct regular performance
evaluations.
○ Step in strategically during high-risk or high-impact situations to support the team
without becoming a bottleneck.
○ Interview candidates for new positions across the department; ensure that there
is a consistent pipeline of “A Players” as the team grows.
3. Delivery, Capacity & Risk Management
○ Conduct comprehensive reviews of all new clients to provide direction to the
team on how to meet objectives for each onboarding project.
○ Maintain ownership of team-wide onboarding timelines, milestones, and
deliverables.
○ Proactively manage capacity, including PTO, holidays, and leave to prevent
missed deadlines or burnout.
○ Ensure task readiness, dependencies, and documentation standards are met
before work is assigned or reassigned.
○ Identify, escalate, and mitigate risks early; failure to escalate known risks is
considered a failure of the role.
4. Visibility, Reporting & Leadership Communication
○ Provide leadership with timely, accurate, decision-ready reporting on onboarding
status, capacity, and risk.
○ Translate operational realities into actionable insights for leadership decision-
making.
5. Client Experience, Visibility & Cross-Functional Partnership
○ Maintain a visible leadership presence with new clients, including participating in
client meetings to identify, address, and resolve onboarding challenges.
○ Lead difficult or high-stakes conversations with clients when issues arise,
ensuring clarity, alignment, and trust.
○ Coordinate with ongoing accounting teams and the onboarding team to escalate
and resolve onboarding issues, ensuring smooth transitions and shared
accountability.
○ Coordinate with the business development team regularly to ensure proactive
capacity planning and fluid communication regarding client expectations.
○ Represent the firm externally as needed, including participation in marketing
efforts, thought leadership, or client-facing initiatives.
Experience & Qualifications
Required Experience
● Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
● 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong foundation in nonprofit
accounting.
● Demonstrated experience owning and leading a function or department, with
accountability for outcomes, capacity, and risk – not just day-to-day execution.
● Proven people leadership experience, including hiring, coaching, performance
management, and developing experienced staff.
● Experience leading through complexity, ambiguity, or periods of growth, including
making judgment calls with incomplete information.
Preferred Experience
● CPA license
● 5+ years of nonprofit accounting experience.
● 5+ years of progressive leadership experience.
● Prior experience overseeing client onboarding, implementation, or complex client
transitions.
Skills & Attributes

● High level of professional judgment and comfort making and defending decisions.
● Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills, particularly in executive and
client-facing contexts.
● Ability to balance empathy with accountability when leading teams.
● Comfort operating at a strategic altitude while staying connected to operational reality.
What Success Looks Like
● Leadership has consistent, accurate visibility into onboarding performance and risk.
● The onboarding team meets deadlines with minimal rework and clear accountability.
● Capacity is proactively managed, even during high-growth or reduced-availability
periods.
● Cross-functional teams trust onboarding to deliver predictable, high-quality outcomes.
● New clients transition smoothly into ongoing services with confidence in our firm.
