As an Associate Accountant for our rapidly growing company, you are responsible for providing accounting services for the nonprofit clients that are assigned to you. You will prepare monthly financial reports, support the annual audit process, and provide other accounting services. What You Would Be Helping Us With:

  • Regularly perform bookkeeping tasks (processing bills, recording revenue and expense transactions, posting payroll entries, etc).
  • Maintain timely email correspondence with clients; answer client questions, follow-up on outstanding requests, and coordinate regarding upcoming projects.
  • Conduct month-end close procedures for all assigned clients.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations (bank accounts, investments, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, lease-related accounts, payroll accrual, deferred revenue, debt, and restricted net assets).
  • Prepare monthly financial reports with an executive summary narrative for all assigned clients.
  • Track spend-down of clients’ restricted grants. Review all new client grant agreements to ensure that grants are accounted for and tracked properly and to identify any compliance expectations that may impact our accounting processes.
  • Conduct a full annual review of client financial statements to ensure that they are accurate and ‘audit-ready’ prior to the commencement of financial statement audits.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with client auditors, ensuring that all requested documentation is provided in a timely manner, so that the audit timeline can remain on track.
  • Prepare annual 1099 filings for all assigned clients.
  • Participate in new client onboarding meetings to understand their unique needs and to build customized accounting processes.
  • Participate in periodic client ‘desk reviews’ to identify areas for improvement and to develop a game plan for cleaning-up any accounting issues.
  • Maintain and rigorously document accounting processes for all assigned clients. Proactively revise accounting processes as necessary.
  • On an annual basis, prepare a custom assessment of each client’s financial health, leveraging our proprietary Nonprofit Blueprint model.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or similar field such as finance or business administration, or have at least 3 months of accounting/bookkeeping experience
  • Energized by working with nonprofit organizations
  • Willing to learn new software and skills
  • Able to communicate in a conscientious and inclusive way, both verbally and in writing

As a Chief Financial Officer for our rapidly growing company, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of a team of 7-8 professionals, consisting of 4-5 Accounting Associates and Senior Accounting Associates, 1 Accounting Manager, 1 Accounting Assistant, and up to 1 Accounting Intern.  Our CFO teams are responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of a full suite of accounting and bookkeeping services to a wide range of nonprofit clients. What You Would Be Helping Us With:

The CFO has many responsibilities. They oversee and handle the day-to-day operations of a team of 7-8 professionals, and they are responsible for serving 30-40 clients.  This requires that they have advanced accounting knowledge, comfortability with technology, and significant management experience. CFO responsibilities can be divided into two major categories: management responsibilities and client responsibilities.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Lead staff meetings and training.
  • Conduct weekly one-on-one check-ins with all team members.
  • Answer team member questions.
  • Proactively track team-wide tasks, projects, and upcoming deadlines to remove roadblocks and ensure that your team has the tools they need to complete each task correctly and on time.
  • Ensure that your team is effectively communicating with clients; step-in when necessary to answer client questions or de-escalate concerns.
  • Plan for team member PTO or other absences to ensure that client deliverables are still met.
  • Review KPIs, including deadlines met, responsiveness to email correspondence, and client profitability.  When KPIs are off track, take ownership and work proactively to get back on track.
  • Conduct a monthly evaluation of all team members, providing direct and actionable feedback to ensure accountability and to enable long-term growth.
  • Regularly evaluate staff capacity and skill to determine the assignment of client responsibilities.
  • Interview candidates for open positions.
  • Onboard new employees and ensure their successful transition to the company.
  • Facilitate training workshops for new hires.
  • Facilitate team member engagement by hosting team events and activities.
  • Participate in firm leadership activities and “face of the firm” events, as assigned.
  • Seek out opportunities for professional development and ongoing education.
  • Fill-in for team member absences, as necessary.

Client Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze monthly financial reports for all assigned clients to evaluate the financial health of each organization.
  • Provide support to clients by preparing annual budgets, cash flow forecasts, and other financial analyses.
  • Present financial report presentations to client leadership and boards of directors.
  • Periodically check-in with clients to assess client satisfaction, address issues, and build long-term relationships.
  • Participate in new client onboarding meetings to understand their unique needs and to build customized accounting processes.
  • Manage client expectations and scope of services to ensure that we are ultimately meeting their needs.
  • Participate in internal ‘desk review’ debrief meetings to identify areas for improvement and to develop a game plan for cleaning-up any accounting issues.
  • Ensure that your team maintains appropriate accounting processes for all assigned clients.  Proactively revise accounting processes as necessary.
  • On an annual basis, prepare and present a custom assessment of each client’s financial health, leveraging our proprietary Nonprofit Blueprint model.
  • Communicate annual fee increases with assigned clients.
  • Serve as a CFO and strategic advisor for assigned clients. Provide clients with answers to their accounting questions and communicate proactively when accounting problems are identified.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting or Accounting-related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in full-cycle accounting or public accounting as an auditor or outsourced accountant
  • 1-2 years of nonprofit accounting experience, preferred 
  • 2-4 years of successfully building and managing a team
  • CPA license, preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Proficiency with accounting software
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Advanced accounting knowledge

What Success Looks Like in the First 6 Months:

To ensure your success in this role, you will be provided with a lot of training to learn our business, our clients, and our leadership culture.  You will not inherit a fully functioning team on your first day.  Instead, you will gradually hire team members and take on new clients until your team is built out.

During your first 6 months in the job, you will be expected to serve many functions that do not fall within the normal scope of the CFO role.  This will be your opportunity to experience and learn the key functions of the team.  Some of these functions include (but are not limited to):

  • Perform bookkeeping tasks (processing bills, recording revenue and expense transactions, posting payroll entries, etc).
  • Conduct month-end close procedures for clients, including performing reconciliations, calculating allocation entries, and preparing monthly financial reports.
  • Track spend-down of clients’ restricted grants.  Review all new client grant agreements to ensure that grants are accounted for and tracked properly and to identify any compliance expectations that may impact our accounting processes.
  • Review client financial reports, as prepared by other members of the team, on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
  • Review client financial statements to ensure that they are accurate and ‘audit-ready’ prior to the commencement of financial statement audits.
  • Serve as a liaison with client auditors, ensuring that all requested documentation is provided in a timely manner, so that the audit timeline can remain on track.
  • Conduct an end-of-year review of client financial statements prior to the preparation of the annual Form 990 return.
  • Facilitate the annual 1099 filing process for all assigned clients.
  • Tackle client-related projects, such as building workpapers, investigating accounting discrepancies, completing chart of account revisions, performing cash- to accrual-basis conversions, etc.

After 6 months in your role, you should be able to successfully complete the following:

  • Analyze financial statements and present key takeaways to stakeholders.
  • Prepare budgets and forecasts for clients.
  • Manage your team to ensure client needs are met and deliverables are consistently on time.
  • Maintain accounting processes to ensure quality and to meet our clients’ unique needs
  • Problem solve with clients, providing strategic advisory support and ‘out of the box’ solutions.
  • Maintain client relationships for long-term satisfaction and retention.
  • Be an ambassador for The Charity CFO, externally and internally.

Job Title: Accounting Manager

As an Accounting Manager for our rapidly growing company, you will assist in the day-to-day management of a team of 7-8 professionals, consisting of 4-5 Accounting Associates and Senior Accounting Associates, 1 Accounting Assistant, and up to 1 Accounting Intern. You will report to the CFO, who serves as the leader of your entire team. Our CFO teams are responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of a full suite of accounting and bookkeeping services to a wide range of nonprofit clients. We are looking for an intrinsically motivated problem-solver who values transparency, inclusion, collaboration, and impact. At The Charity CFO, you will leverage your passion for accounting and the nonprofit sector to make a lasting impact for your clients.

In this role, you are expected to work closely with your team to ensure that all client deliverables are accurate and on time. You will rarely be expected to meet directly with clients; you will work primarily behind the scenes to understand your clients’ unique needs and accounting processes, and you will be responsible for ensuring that your team follows those processes to fidelity.

What You Would Be Helping Us With:

The Accounting Manager has many responsibilities. They assist their CFO in the day-to-day operations of a team of 7-8 professionals, and they are responsible for serving 30-40 clients. This requires that they have advanced accounting knowledge, comfortability with technology, and some management experience. Accounting Manager responsibilities can be divided into two major categories: management responsibilities and client responsibilities.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Lead staff meetings and training.
  • Answer team member questions.
  • Proactively track team-wide tasks, projects, and upcoming deadlines to remove roadblocks and ensure that your team has the tools they need to complete each task correctly and on time.
  • Leverage Accounting Assistants and Interns to facilitate the delegation of team tasks whenever possible such that every member of the team is fully utilized.
  • Plan for team member PTO or other absences to ensure that client deliverables are still met.
  • Assist in the onboarding of new employees to ensure their successful transition to the company.
  • Work closely with the Quality Assurance Team to ensure that client accounting systems are accurate, audits are properly managed, and all compliance deadlines are met.
  • Facilitate training workshops for new hires.
  • Seek out opportunities for professional development and ongoing education.
  • Fill-in for team member absences, as necessary.

Client Responsibilities:

  • Review client financial reports, as prepared by Accounting Associates and Senior Accounting Associates, on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
  • Ensure that the team is proactive in tracking spend-down of clients’ restricted grants. Review all new client grant agreements monthly to ensure that grants are accounted for and tracked properly and to identify any compliance expectations that may impact our accounting processes.
  • Review client financial statements to ensure that they are accurate and ‘audit-ready’ prior to the commencement of financial statement audits.
  • Monitor ongoing client audits to ensure that the timeline remains on track.
  • Review client audit drafts at the conclusion of audit fieldwork to ensure accuracy.
  • Conduct an end-of-year review of client financial statements prior to the preparation of the annual Form 990 return. The actual preparation and review of the
  • Form 990 will not fall under the responsibility of the Accounting Manager.
  • Review all other client deliverables prepared by the team to ensure accuracy.
  • Facilitate the annual 1099 filing process for all assigned clients.
  • Participate in new client onboarding meetings to understand their unique needs and to build customized accounting processes.
  • Conduct an internal ‘desk review’ of 3-4 clients per month to identify areas for improvement and to develop a game plan for cleaning-up any accounting issues.
  • Ensure that your team maintains appropriate accounting processes for all assigned clients. Proactively revise accounting processes as necessary.
  • Tackle client-related projects, such as building workpapers, investigating accounting discrepancies, completing chart of account revisions, performing cash- to accrual-basis conversions, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting or Accounting-related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in full-cycle accounting or public accounting as an auditor or outsourced accountant
  • 1-2 years of nonprofit accounting experience, preferred
  • 1-2 years of management experience, preferred
  • CPA license, preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Proficiency with accounting software
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Advanced accounting knowledge

What Success Looks Like in the First 90 Days:

  • Review financial statements to identify errors and provide feedback to team members.
  • Ensure that accounting systems are properly maintained and that processes and workpapers adhere to the firm’s standards.

  • Maintain accounting processes to ensure quality and to meet our clients’ unique needs
  • Facilitate our clients’ audit process to minimize the chance of audit adjustments or findings.
  • Be an ambassador for The Charity CFO, externally and internally.

As an Onboarding Accountant for our rapidly growing company, you will focus on client service and ensure we make the best first impression with new clients. Our onboarding team members work exclusively with new clients to ensure a smooth transition from onboarding to ongoing client services. 

Our new clients have differing accounting situations. In some cases, we are replacing another outsourced accounting firm. In other cases, we are replacing an in-house finance director or CFO. Some of our new clients do not have an established accounting system or require an accounting system migration. In nearly every case, our new clients require some level of accounting clean-up and process improvement. This is not your typical repetitive accounting role!

What you would be helping us with: 

  • Facilitate meetings and discussions with new clients.
  • Facilitate the onboarding process for multiple clients.
  • Complete a comprehensive assessment of financial accounting records of new clients.
  • Assess a new client’s accounting system and requirements, cleaning-up account balances and accounting system set-up and migration, as required.

  • Provide the best possible client service. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or an Accounting-related field
  • 3-5 years of full cycle accounting experience
  • 1+ years of nonprofit accounting experience 
  • Proven track record of successfully managing multiple projects at once
  • Significant experience in direct client service
  • Experience with cloud-based accounting systems and tools (such as QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, Xero, Dext, Expensify, and/or Bill.com)
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Tech-savviness and comfort with software is a non-negotiable
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • A task-master with strong project management skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to communicate in a conscientious and inclusive way, both verbally and in writing

What you would be helping us with: 

  • Support the team by providing training and answering technical questions.
  • Regularly perform bookkeeping tasks (processing bills, recording revenue and expense transactions, posting payroll entries, etc).
  • Maintain timely email correspondence with clients; answer client questions, follow-up on outstanding requests, and coordinate regarding upcoming projects.
  • Conduct month-end close procedures for all assigned clients.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations (bank accounts, investments, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, lease-related accounts, payroll accrual, deferred revenue, debt, and restricted net assets).
  • Prepare monthly financial reports with an executive summary narrative for all assigned clients.
  • Track spend-down of clients’ restricted grants. Review all new client grant agreements to ensure that grants are accounted for and tracked properly and to identify any compliance expectations that may impact our accounting processes.
  • Conduct a full annual review of client financial statements to ensure that they are accurate and ‘audit-ready’ prior to the commencement of financial statement audits.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with client auditors, ensuring that all requested documentation is provided in a timely manner, so that the audit timeline can remain on track.
  • Prepare annual 1099 filings for all assigned clients.
  • Participate in new client onboarding meetings to understand their unique needs and to build customized accounting processes.
  • Participate in periodic client ‘desk reviews’ to identify areas for improvement and to develop a game plan for cleaning-up any accounting issues.
  • Maintain and rigorously document accounting processes for all assigned clients.  Proactively revise accounting processes as necessary.
  • Prepare budgets and forecasts.
  • On an annual basis, prepare a custom assessment of each client’s financial health, leveraging our proprietary Nonprofit Blueprint model.
  • Tackle client-related projects, such as building workpapers, investigating accounting discrepancies, completing chart of account revisions, performing cash- to accrual-basis conversions, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in full cycle accounting or external auditing
  • Energized by working with non-profit organizations
  • Have experience with Quickbooks Online or another accounting system
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience with mentoring or training new team members, preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, preferred
  • Experience managing multiple clients, preferred
