Audit Assistance for Nonprofits

The right audit prep starts with clean records and a partner who’s done it before.

Avoid the Scramble With Year-Round Audit Readiness

When it comes to audits, most nonprofits don’t struggle because of one big error. It’s usually a dozen small ones—missing documentation, poorly labeled expenses, confusing charts of accounts. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With The Charity CFO’s audit assistance, your books are accurate, organized, and audit-ready all year long—not just during crunch time. We support you through every phase of the process, from preparing schedules and gathering documentation to answering your auditor’s questions and strengthening your internal controls.

The Foundation of a Smooth Nonprofit Audit

What you really need ahead of an audit is the right partner—someone who ensures everything is accurate before the audit begins and who can stand beside you throughout the process. The Charity CFO is here to help with audit assistance services including:

  • Preparing audit schedules and requested documentation

  • Evaluating and improving internal controls

  • Ensuring accurate, timely nonprofit audited financial statements

  • Serving as a liaison between your nonprofit and the audit firm

  • Supporting Form 990 prep by supplying the necessary data

  • Aligning your systems with federal grant audit requirements

  • Advising on best practices for document retention and segregation of duties

Whether auditing for your nonprofit organization is being performed for the first time or the tenth, we’ll keep you moving through it with clarity and confidence.

Audit Assistance Made for the Way Nonprofits Work

We handle communications, field audit questions, and deliver requested schedules, so you don’t have to play middleman.

  • Internal Controls Evaluation

We review your procedures and identify areas for improvement in document retention, segregation of duties, and audit readiness—reducing risks before they arise.

  • Tax Prep Collaboration

It’s About More Than Passing the Audit

Getting through your audit is important. But so is using it as a moment to strengthen your financial systems, improve transparency, and build trust with your board, funders, and stakeholders. With our audit assistance, your audit becomes an asset—not a headache.

When your bookkeeping is clean and your processes are strong, everything becomes easier: applying for grants, answering donor questions, making strategic decisions, and preparing for future growth. We’re not just helping you “get through it.” We’re helping you grow through it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Audit Assistance

No. As your financial partner, we support the nonprofit audit process—but we’re not the auditing firm. Instead, we work alongside your external auditor to prepare materials and act as your liaison throughout the process.

For clients with audits, we typically coordinate with your external CPA to provide everything needed for tax preparation. While we do offer 990 prep in-house when needed, we don’t take on tax returns as a stand-alone service

We support audits from local, state, and federal funders—including Single Audits under Uniform Guidance. If your organization spends $1 million or more in federal funds (for fiscal years ending after 10/1/24), a Single Audit may be required. We help you prepare with compliant systems, clean documentation, and financial reports that meet funder standards.
