On this week’s episode of A Modern Nonprofit Podcast, CEO Tosha Anderson of The Charity CFO invites James Mueller. James Mueller is a nationally recognized authority in the nonprofit sector, president of consulting firm James Mueller & Associates LLC (JMA), and author of the new book, Onboarding Champions: The Seven Recruiting Principles of Highly Effective Nonprofit Boards.
James speaks on building diverse, equitable boards and how this is one of the greatest challenges nonprofits are facing. James also speaks about dysfunctional boards and how quickly they can destroy the good work a nonprofit has established over decades. The Boards relationship with the CEO is crucial to the health and well-being of a nonprofit—but the relationship is often misunderstood and not cultivated.
He will let the viewer in a secret, that affective boards do not happen by chance, they are created through a disciplined approach to recruitment and onboarding. And lastly he speaks on how to confront board members who serve their own interests—resume padding, status, networking—becoming dead weight or even disruptive forces rather than investing wholeheartedly in the cause of the nonprofit.
