Strategic Fundraising Doesn’t Start with the Ask—It Starts with the Plan

    File 29

In a sector dominated by last-minute appeals and burnout-inducing gift cycles, Mandy Moody wants you to know there’s a better way. On this episode of A Modern Nonprofit Podcast, Mandy joins host Tosha Anderson to unpack her 4P Formula for fundraising and show nonprofit leaders how to build a strategy that actually scales—without burning out your team or ghosting your donors.

You Don’t Have Time Not to Slow Down

Mandy’s biggest breakthrough as an executive director didn’t come from chasing new donors. It came when she slowed down. By stepping out of the reactive day-to-day and asking the right questions, she developed the 4P Formula: Problem, Program, Plan, and Purposeful Investment. This approach not only transformed how she talked to donors—it helped her grow a nonprofit from $750K to $2M in revenue.

    The 4P Formula

    1. Problem — Don’t assume your donors understand the urgency of the problem you solve. Use clear, jargon-free language to connect emotionally and intellectually. Pro tip: Test your pitch with your closest donors to get real feedback.
    2. Program — Show how your work directly addresses the problem. Use proof of concept and data-driven stories to convey why your organization is uniquely positioned to deliver.
    3. Plan — Budget to your actual vision. That means fully funding your operations, your staff, and your growth—not just scraping by. Donors respect financial clarity. Mandy calls this CGV budgeting: Crisis, Growth, Visionary
    4. Purposeful Investment — This is the ask. But instead of guessing what a donor might want to give, you invite them to reflect and choose their best gift. When the first three P’s are strong, the ask becomes a natural next step.

You Can’t Build Relationships If You’re Always Chasing the Next Gift

Mandy challenges the traditional donor cycle mindset. Most organizations give equal weight to cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. But in her model, cultivation and stewardship should be 70% of your effort. When you focus on building deep, meaningful relationships, the ask becomes less intimidating—for both you and your board.

And stewardship isn’t optional. “Don’t ghost your donors,” Mandy says. A weekly Gratitude Power Hour helped her transform donor retention and stay grounded in purpose. If you want donors to keep coming back, make them feel like partners, not piggy banks.

Where to Start? Start with the Problem

Feeling overwhelmed? Mandy’s advice: take three deep breaths, be kind to yourself, and start by rewriting your problem statement. You can even use her ChatGPT-ready template to get unstuck.

Clarity creates momentum. And momentum leads to funding that’s not just recurring, but scalable and sustaining.
