Is Your Website Working for You? The Nonprofit Guide to Smart Digital Marketing

If you’re a nonprofit leader feeling overwhelmed by digital marketing—or unsure if your website is even helping you anymore—this episode of A Modern Nonprofit Podcast is for you.

Tosha sits down with Lou Kotsinis, CEO of BCS Interactive, to unpack how nonprofit marketing is evolving and what it really takes to thrive in the digital space today.

    The Website Isn’t Dead—But It’s Definitely Changed

For years, marketing experts hammered home one message: drive traffic to your website. Every ad, email, and social post was built to push people to click through.

But Lou says that era is fading fast.

Thanks to platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and AI tools like ChatGPT, people are no longer relying on websites to discover new organizations. They’re learning about your cause within the platforms themselves—and often never clicking out.
That doesn’t mean your website doesn’t matter anymore. In fact, Lou argues it may be more important than ever—just in a different role. Instead of being your main communication hub, your site is now your digital validator. It’s the final checkpoint people use to confirm what they’ve already learned about you elsewhere.

So if your website is unclear, outdated, or confusing? That’s not just a design problem. It’s a credibility issue.

    Story First, Strategy Second

One major takeaway from the conversation is this: Before you think about platforms, tools, or trends, you need to have your story nailed down.

What do you do? Why do you do it? Who do you serve? What makes your approach unique?

So many nonprofits think they’ve answered those questions—until they realize they can’t actually communicate it in plain, compelling language. Your story isn’t just a mission statement or a values page. It’s the foundation for every piece of your digital marketing.

Once your story is solid, that’s when it’s time to tailor it to each platform—without obsessing over traffic to your site. Think of every platform as its own mini-stage where your nonprofit can show up, educate, inspire, and connect.

AI Search Is Quietly Reshaping Discovery

We’re also in the early stages of a big shift toward AI-driven search. While Google still dominates, more people are turning to AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity to learn about causes, organizations, and even where to donate.

These tools are trained on content across the internet: social media, news outlets, blogs, and databases. That means nonprofits need to show up everywhere their audience might look—not just in Google search results.

Lou explains that AI pulls from mentions, citations, and brand consistency across platforms. So your goal should be to get your story—and your name—into the digital ecosystem where these tools can find you.

    The CEO’s Role in Marketing

One of the most honest moments in the conversation comes from Tosha herself. She shares that even as the founder of a growing, multi-million dollar firm, she still serves as the de facto CMO.

And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Because marketing isn’t just about copy and colors—it’s about vision. And no one else is better equipped to articulate that vision than the CEO or executive director.

Lou agrees: While execution can (and often should) be delegated or outsourced, leaders must stay intimately involved in the messaging, tone, and strategy behind the scenes.

Marketing Is Not a One-and-Done Project

If you’ve been holding off on building your digital presence until “everything’s perfect,” Lou and Tosha both say the same thing: Stop waiting.

The best digital strategies are continuous. Your website, your content, and even your brand can—and should—evolve over time. Don’t let perfectionism keep you from progress.

Start with clarity. Stay consistent. And remember that your website, your social media, your search presence—they all work together to create the trust and recognition your organization needs to grow.
