Teamwork and Integrity: Lessons in Strong Nonprofit Leadership

Strong nonprofit leadership is more than vision – it’s about people, trust, and values that stand the test of time.

In a recent episode of A Modern Nonprofit Podcast, Tosha Anderson sat down with Karen Leies, President & CEO of The Seeing Eye. The organization’s mission is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of people who are blind through the partnership of Seeing Eye dogs. Together, they explored what it takes to lead well in today’s nonprofit sector.

    Purpose, Empathy, and Innovation

Karen shared three priorities that guide her leadership: purpose, empathy, and innovation. She emphasized that leadership begins with people – both the teams who serve and the communities who benefit. Empathy, she explained, allows leaders to build trust with staff, volunteers, donors, and clients. And while The Seeing Eye is rooted in nearly a century of tradition, innovation is what keeps the mission alive and evolving.

A key theme in the conversation was integrity.

For Karen, integrity means showing up as the same authentic leader in every setting – staff meetings, boardrooms, or donor conversations. Saying what you mean, following through, and keeping communication clear creates trust that allows teams to thrive.

Another theme was teamwork. Karen shared that her role isn’t to be the expert in every area but to ensure her team has the resources – whether that’s funding, training, or advocacy – to succeed. “I wasn’t hired to be them,” she explained. “I was hired to give my team what they need.”

Karen closed with advice for new nonprofit leaders: find mentors. Leadership doesn’t have to be lonely when you seek counsel, guidance, and wisdom from those who’ve gone before, and when you pay it forward by mentoring others.

If you’re a nonprofit leader navigating growth, change, or challenges, this episode is a reminder: teamwork and integrity are more than buzzwords, they’re the foundation of leadership that lasts.
