Leading Through Scarcity: How Nonprofit Leaders Can Find Clarity

Scarcity is a familiar reality for nonprofit leaders. Most of us think about it in terms of dollars and budgets, but according to Pierre Berastain of The Centre for Public Impact, scarcity runs deeper than finances.

In his conversation with Tosha Anderson, on A Modern Nonprofit Podcast, Pierre reveals three forms of scarcity that shape nonprofit culture:

    • Financial scarcity: Limited grants, short funding cycles, and chronic underinvestment.
    • Structural scarcity: Inadequate systems, policies, and staffing that keep organizations stuck in crisis mode.
    • Psychological scarcity: A mindset shaped by years of “doing more with less” that fosters fear, self-limitation, and burnout.

The real danger, Pierre explains, is how these forms of scarcity reinforce each other—creating cycles that trap organizations in survival mode.

    From Crisis-Driven to Clarity-Driven

Nonprofit leaders often default to urgency. As Pierre puts it, “Urgency is seductive.” Responding to the next crisis feels responsible, even heroic. But urgency-driven leadership drains staff, erodes culture, and keeps organizations from solving the deeper issues.

A clarity-driven culture, on the other hand, roots decisions in mission and long-term vision. Leaders ask better questions: What’s essential right now? How do today’s choices align with where we want to be a year from now? And they empower staff with decision filters tied to strategy—reducing bottlenecks and building trust.

    Building Sustainable Leadership Practices

Pierre also highlights practical leadership shifts that make a difference:

    • Normalize real rest. Leaders need extended time off to truly reset and see the bigger picture.

    • Model healthy boundaries. Clarity and transparency help manage competing demands without burning out.

    • Create a personal board of directors. Trusted mentors, colleagues, and friends who keep you accountable to your goals and values.

Scarcity is more than a funding problem. It’s a cultural challenge that requires nonprofit leaders to slow down, set boundaries, and lead from clarity instead of fear. The shift isn’t easy, but it’s the only way to build resilient organizations that can truly serve their communities.
