Nonprofit Board Myths, Truths, and the Path to a Board That Works

What if the problem with your board… wasn’t your board?

In this candid and honest conversation on A Modern Nonprofit Podcast, Tosha Anderson chats with ENGin founder Katerina Manoff about the realities of nonprofit board leadership—and how to finally create a board that serves your mission instead of slowing it down.

The Myth of the Perfect Board

Early-stage founders often imagine their boards as a dream team of cheerleaders, fundraisers, and strategic thinkers who will work for free and deliver big results. Spoiler alert: That board rarely exists.

Katerina breaks down why this idealized vision sets founders up for disappointment—and why accepting a more realistic approach can actually empower better board building. “It’s not about what you thought a board should be,” she explains, “it’s about what your organization needs right now.”

From Founder Boards to Evolving Governance

As ENGin scaled, Katerina had to evolve her board multiple times. What started as a “yes crew” of trusted allies became a liability as the organization grew. The key? Understanding that your board must evolve with your organization—and sometimes that means hard decisions.

She introduces the concept of “bless and release”—the art of thanking board members for their service and letting them go when their season is done. It’s not personal. It’s strategic.

    Boards Are Not One-Size-Fits-All

Whether you have a working board, a fundraising board, or something in between, the key to healthy board dynamics is clarity. What role do you need your board members to play? What expectations are clear? And are you aligning people with actual needs instead of generic roles?

Don’t expect your tech expert to lead fundraising if they’ve never done it. And don’t assume a prestigious name equals effectiveness. Katerina recommends looking at your goals first—and then recruiting board members who fill real, timely gaps.

The Anatomy of a Healthy Board

So what does a thriving board really look like? Katerina paints a picture:

    • Enthusiastic, mission-aligned members who like each other
    • A culture of communication, contribution, and clear roles
    • Board members who know what’s expected and why it matters
    • Leadership that isn’t afraid to initiate tough conversations

Whether you’re in a scrappy startup stage or managing a mid-sized nonprofit in transition, this episode reminds us that building a board isn’t a checkbox—it’s an ongoing leadership practice.
